Why it is Important to Have Fire Damper Testing?
Fire dampers are designed to prevent the spread of fire throughout the ductwork and other areas of your building. When working correctly, your fire dampers will close automatically as soon as excessive heat is detected. It is therefore critical that the mechanisms on these devices are functioning correctly in the event of a fire.
Since fire dampers are usually hidden within the ductwork or the ceiling, it is easy to forget about them. As you cannot readily access these devices routine testing and maintenance must be carried by a certified expert.
Fire Damper Testing Requirements
In accordance with the British Standards 9999:2017, all fire dampers should be drop tested, cleaned, and routinely maintained within a minimum of years, and spring operated fire dampers should be tested at least once a year.

Consequences of Neglected Fire Dampers
Neglected fire dampers will result in a system that can not be depended on in the event of a fire. Over time particles and residue can build up, preventing the mechanisms from working properly which will inevitably lead to the safety curtain failing to close and the spread of fire throughout the duct and other areas of the building.
Fatalities caused by fire damper neglect may result in prosecution under the Corporate Manslaughter Act. Fire damage caused by a fire damper that has not undergone the required routine maintenance may void your insurance cover.
